Focus Not Just On Ram Temple: PM's "Mantra For 2024" At NDA Meet

July 31, 2023 at 11:26PM Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the NDA to focus on issues apart from Ram Mandir ahead of the 2024 general elections. At a meeting with MPs from Uttar Pradesh today, the Prime Minister advised the MPs to go local, and "spend more time with the people", sources said. The MPs who attended the meet -- to be a part of a series of meetings -- were from West Uttar Pradesh, Braj and the Kanpur-Bundelkhand area. Sources said the Prime Minister has asked the MPs to talk about local issues in their respective constituencies, go to programmes that people attend including weddings. "PM Modi gave the mantra of 2024 victory to NDA MPs. 'Convince those who are sulky, angry, spend more and more time with the public during elections," a source quoted him as saying. Invoking 'coalition dharma', he said unlike the UPA, the NDA is about sacrifice, not selfishness, sources said.   As an example, PM Modi cited Bihar Chief Minister Nitish K...

Watch: Fairytale End! Broad Dismisses Carey With Last Ball Of Test Career

July 31, 2023 at 11:17PM England beat Australia by 49 runs to win the fifth Test at The Oval on Monday and end the Ashes series all square at 2-2. Australia, chasing 384 to win, collapsed from 264-3 to 334 all out, with England's retiring paceman Stuart Broad taking the final two wickets in the form of Todd Murphy and Alex Carey.  Australia suffered a dramatic collapse in the last session, reduced to 294-8 as England's Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes ripped through their batting order at The Oval.  Rain kept the players off the field for about two hours before Australia, who as the holders have already retained the Ashes at 2-1 up, resumed on 238-3. That still left the tourists needing 146 more runs to reach an imposing victory target of 384. Steve Smith, dropped at leg gully by England captain Ben Stokes just before the interval, was 40 not out and left-hander Travis Head 31 not out. The pair had extended their fourth-wicket stand to 95 when off-spinner...

July 29, 2023 at 11:54PM England great Stuart Broad said Saturday he will retire from all cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval, describing his career as "a wonderful ride". The 37-year-old seamer, the fifth most successful bowler in Test history with 602 wickets, told Sky Sports after stumps on the third day: "Tomorrow (Sunday) or Monday will be my last game of cricket. Develop Rules To Probe 'Love-Jihad' Cases: Himanta Sarma To Cops

July 29, 2023 at 12:19AM Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday urged the police to develop a standard operating Procedure (SOP) for probing cases of 'love-jihad' in the state. The root cause of 'love jihad' is forceful religious conversions, Mr Sarma claimed in his address to the superintendents of police at a convention in Bongaigaon. "Besides, an act will be implemented soon in the state through which the marriageable age will be legally fixed for all communities, multiple marriages will be stopped and more legislative steps will be taken so that when arrests are made for violating the norms, the accused do not get bail," Mr Sarma said. The chief minister has been claiming that the triple murder case in Golaghat where a 25-year old Muslim man killed his Hindu wife and her parents on Monday was a case of 'love jihad', a term used by right-wing groups to allege that Muslim men lure Hindu women to convert through marriage. He also claim...

Opinion: Manipur Needs Healing, Today

Image
July 28, 2023 at 11:13PM As I write this, we have just concluded the seventh day of parliament. No sign yet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi inside Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. The closest he has come to the chambers of both Houses is to address the media somewhere in the precincts of parliament House. The INDIA parties (preferred usage to "Opposition parties") are striving to get a discussion going in parliament on Manipur. There is one hitch. The PM does not want to participate in the debate. The INDIA parties insist he must. Hence, the logjam. Let's leave parliament aside for a moment, and consider the footage that has surfaced from Manipur. Last week a bone-chilling video was circulated on social media. Two women from the conflict ridden state were being paraded naked by a mob of men, some of whom seemed to be teenagers. Since then, several details have emerged. What we know so far is that this incident occured soon after the violence in Manipur erupted. That it was cau...

Harmanpreet May Get 2-Game Suspension, Likely To Miss Asiad Matches: Report

July 24, 2023 at 11:08PM Indian women's team captain Harmanpreet Kaur could well miss first two games in the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games on charges of equipment abuse and public criticism of match officials after the tied third ODI against Bangladesh on Saturday. Harmanpreet was adjudged leg before off a Nahida Akter delivery while trying to sweep but she claimed that she got a bottom edge and in a fit of rage shattered the stumps before walking back to the pavilion. Later at the post match presentation ceremony, she termed the level of umpiring as "pathetic" and also sarcastically asked the umpires to be called to join the teams for trophy ceremony. Her boorish behaviour had prompted Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana to walk away with her team and urge her Indian counterpart to learn some "manners". "There is still some deliberation going on whether she should get three demerit points or four as there are two charges -- match equipment abuse and cri...

US Sisters Sue Funeral Home For Burying Stranger In Their Father's Grave

July 23, 2023 at 11:31PM Two sisters in the US have filed a $60 million lawsuit against a pair of funeral homes after the wrong man was allegedly buried in their father's grave, New York Post reported. As per the lawsuit,  Stacy Holzman and Megan Zaner have accused Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Service in Fountain Inn, S.C., of mistaking another person's remains for their father and placing the wrong body in his burial clothes. Notably, Clifford Zaner died of heart failure at his South Carolina home on February 25, at the age of 72. He told his family that he wanted to be buried in black jeans and his favorite Led Zeppelin T-shirt. After he died, his body was supposed to be shipped to New York. However, the wrong man was sent and then buried in their father's favourite clothes. The sisters noticed something was wrong when they asked to see their father one last time.  “I knew something was wrong the day of the funeral. There were red flags when we viewed th...

Women Misusing Anti-Rape Law As Weapon Against Partners: High Court

July 22, 2023 at 11:40PM The Uttarakhand High Court has said the law punishing rape is being misused as a weapon by women these days when they have differences with a male partner. Justice Sharad Kumar Sharma made the observation on July 5 while quashing criminal proceedings against a man who was accused of rape by a woman after he refused to marry her. They were having consensual relations since 2005. The Supreme Court has also repeatedly reiterated that a consensual physical relationship between adults cannot be termed rape if one of the parties has refused to marry, the judge said. The Uttarakhand High Court remarked that women are misusing Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against their male counterparts for various reasons, including discord. The woman had filed a complaint on June 30, 2020, stating that the accused was having consensual sex with her since 2005. She said the two had promised each other that they would get married as soon as either of them gets a job. ...

She told the DCW member that since she feared for her life, she had run away from Amroha and come to Delhi with her husband. The commission helped the woman file a complaint with the Delhi Police. However, she refused to take any legal action against her family members at that time, the statement said. On Friday, the commission received a call from her husband who said some men from her family had come to their house, and beat her up and forced her to go with them. After the incident, a case was registered a...

Diagnostic Errors Kill Hundreds Of Thousands In US Each Year, Says Study

July 21, 2023 at 11:30PM A recent study revealed that almost 800,000 Americans suffer from misdiagnoses each year, which is a worrying indicator for the US healthcare system. According to a study that was conducted by scientists at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and released this week, misdiagnosis of disease causes about 371,000 fatalities and 424,000 permanent disabilities, such as brain damage, blindness, the loss of limbs or organs, or metastasized cancer, every year. The researchers write in the report that just 15 diseases account for about half of all serious harm, so the problem may be more tractable than previously imagined. "Diagnostic errors are, by a wide margin, the most under-resourced public health crisis we face," said Dr. David Newman-Toker, director of the Johns Hopkins Diagnostic Excellence Centre. The top five most often misdiagnosed illnesses were lung cancer, sepsis, pneumonia, venous thromboembolism (blood clots in veins), and stroke, which t...

The video shows an elephant crossing a street, with a few calves in the group. The tourists can be heard making peculiar sounds with their mouths. Australian Open and French Open champion Djokovic had been bidding to equal Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles and match Margaret Court's all-time mark of 24 Slams.
