March 31, 2023 at 11:22PM Six people from two families -- one of Romanian descent with Canadian passports, the other from India -- were found dead in a marsh near the Canada-US border after trying to cross illegally into the United States, police said Friday. Their bodies were discovered late Thursday near a capsized boat belonging to a missing man from the Akwesasne Mohawk community, local deputy police chief Lee-Ann O'Brien told a news conference. "The six individuals are believed to be from two families, one of Romanian descent and the other believed to be citizens of India," she said, adding that they include five adults and one child under the age of three. "All are believed to have been attempting illegal entry into the US from Canada," she said. March 28, 2023 at 10:52PM Four employees of a finance company here have been arrested for allegedly holding their colleague hostage as he was unable to return a portion of the money borrowed from them, the Gurugram police said Tuesday. The accused also demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion from his father over the phone. Yogesh, the victim, was freed after his father reached along with police at the office. According to the complaint filed by Bhan Singh, a resident of Khatiwas village in Jhajjar district, his son Yogesh works at a finance company office in Sector 14. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered and the officer in question has been put on "compulsory wait, pending inquiry". The men -- five shop keepers and an auto driver who have been accused in an assault case -- are now out on bail. March 27, 2023 at 11:53PM The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday said it has taken "possession" of 15 land parcels worth Rs 245 crore in Haryana's Gurugram in connection with a money laundering investigation against realty firm Unitech and its promoters. The plots belong to Trikar Group, a benami group of Unitech, the agency said in a statement. The ED had attached these immovable assets earlier under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and following its confirmation by the Adjudicating Authority of the PMLA, the agency has now taken the "physical possession" of these land parcels, the statement said. March 22, 2023 at 11:33PM The manufacturing licence of Noida-based pharmaceutical firm Marion Biotech was cancelled on Wednesday by Uttar Pradesh authorities, according to officials. Marion Biotech's cough syrup Dok-1 was linked with the death of 18 children in Uzbekistan. The incident which happened last December had prompted central and state drug authorities in India to launch a probe into the matter. "The firm's licence was under suspension since January after which a detailed inquiry was initiated. Now the licence of the firm has been cancelled by the Uttar Pradesh Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority. The firm can no longer manufacture the syrup," a government official said. March 22, 2023 at 10:45PM A 32-year-old man has been arrested in Assam for allegedly causing the death of a 13-year-old boy who he had a fight with over playing video games on mobile phone. The incident took place on Monday in Assam's Cachar district when the accused, Dipak Nath, asked the boy - his neighbour' son - to stop playing video games as examinations were going on, said the police. The man first slapped the boy and then complained to the 13-year-old's mother, police said. Following that, boy's mother also scolded him. The boy, upset, allegedly tried to hang himself in a bathroom at his home, police sources said, adding, his family took him in an unconscious state to hospital, where he was declared dead.
